Category C courses at STNIG
The category C course is for people planning to work in haulage, or who need a lorry for their job. The training has two parts, theory lessons and driving lessons with an instructor, and they run in parallel so the course does not drag on. The lessons are held in Jelgava, at Savienības iela 2. After the course you sit the theory and driving exams at the CSDD.
What may you drive with category C?
Maximum authorised mass and age draw the lines. Below is how the CSDD words each category, and where C and C1 differ.
What category C allows
Category C is a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass over 3500 kg that does not fall into category D1 or D. It also covers such a vehicle coupled to a trailer of up to 750 kg.
From the age of 21
Category C can be obtained from the age of 21. From 18 it is possible only in the cases set out in the Road Transport Law, which are tied to the professional qualification.
How C and C1 differ
Category C1 is a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass over 3500 kg but not over 7500 kg, and it can be obtained from the age of 18. Category C has no upper mass limit. At STNIG we train for category C.
When you need category CE
Once the trailer's maximum authorised mass is over 750 kg, category C on its own is not enough and you need category CE. It is taken after category C, and the course is shorter.

10 driving lessons at €60 each and the theory at €100. CSDD fees and the medical assessment are not included.
What extra costs should you expect?
On top of the course price there are the CSDD fees. There are four: 12.86 € for the learner permit, 11.40 € for the theory exam, 44.21 € for the driving exam and 22.41 € for issuing the licence, 90.88 € in total. The medical certificate is separate, and you can have it done at the school itself, as are extra driving lessons if your instructor thinks you need them. Category C theory training
How do the theory lessons work?
The theory lessons cover the traffic regulations as they apply to heavy vehicles: load placement and securing, the size of the vehicle, braking distance and the driver's working and rest hours. A teacher leads the lessons, and before the CSDD exam we go through the topics learners most often get wrong. Lessons in class are held in Jelgava, at Savienības iela 2.

Category C theory online
If the class timetable does not suit you, you can study the category C theory online, in your own time. Online study can start straight away, without waiting for the next class group to open. You can choose the format in the application form, and change it later by getting in touch.
Category C driving lessons
Driving lessons with an instructor
Driving lessons start while the theory course is still running. You agree the times directly with your instructor, around your working hours. Driving is about what you never had to do in a car: the size of the vehicle, the turning radius, the braking distance and reversing. Those are the skills the CSDD checks in the driving exam. The compulsory minimum for category C is 20 academic hours of driving, each 45 minutes. If your instructor judges that you are not ready for the exam, you take further lessons.

Applying to the school
Pick a group and apply on the website or by phone on 29 806 300. Before the training starts you need a medical certificate, which can be done at the school.
The theory course
You study the theory for heavy vehicles in class with us, or online. Online you can start straight away.
Driving lessons
You drive with an instructor, starting while the theory course is still running. The lessons carry on until you are confident with a lorry.
The CSDD exams
First the CSDD theory exam, then the driving exam. Once you pass them, the CSDD issues a licence with category C on it.
Code 95, if you plan to work
To work as a professional driver with category C you also need the professional qualification with the code 95 endorsement.

The CSDD theory exam for category C
The theory exam is taken on a computer at a CSDD office. The school registers you for it once you are in the CSDD system. The fee is 11.40 €.
The manoeuvres
The category C driving exam has two set manoeuvres: from a marked starting position, reversing into and out of a width gate in one movement, and, again from a marked starting position, a reversing manoeuvre.
Driving in traffic
After the manoeuvres comes driving in real traffic, where the examiner assesses how you handle the lorry. The driving exam fee, using your own vehicle, is 44.21 €. The current exam rules and fees are on the CSDD website.
Category C and code 95
Category C lets you drive a lorry, but on its own it is not enough to work as a professional driver. That also requires the professional qualification, marked on the licence as code 95. STNIG runs the code 95 training, so you can do both in one place.
Requirements
- Age 21 and over. From 18 only in the cases set out in the Road Transport Law.
- A category B licence. Category C is added to a licence you already hold.
- A medical certificate. You can have it done at the school itself.
- Training at a driving school, then passing the CSDD theory and driving exams.
