Category CE in Jelgava

Category CE lets you drive a category C towing vehicle coupled to a trailer with a maximum authorised mass over 750 kg. Most international haulage job adverts ask for it. At STNIG the category CE training takes place in Jelgava, at Savienības iela 2, and the course lasts two weeks. It is shorter than category C because the basics of heavy vehicles are already covered, and the focus is on coupling, manoeuvring and load distribution.

Category CE courses at STNIG

The category CE course is for people who already hold category C and plan to work with a full size articulated combination. The training is done at the driving school, and afterwards you sit the exam at the CSDD. The lessons focus on what changes with a trailer: the length of the combination, the path through a turn, reversing and coupling the trailer to the towing vehicle. The lessons are held in Jelgava, at Savienības iela 2.

What is category CE, and what may you drive?

People often search simply for category E. There is no category E on its own; it always comes attached to a base category, so in haulage the one that matters is CE. Below is how the CSDD words it.

  • What category CE allows

Category CE is a category C towing vehicle coupled to a trailer with a maximum authorised mass over 750 kg. There is no upper limit on the trailer's mass, so this is a full size combination.

  • Why there is no category E on its own

The letter E is always an addition to a base category and stands for the trailer: BE is a car with a trailer, CE a lorry with a trailer, DE a bus with a trailer. If you are looking for category E courses for haulage, the category you need is CE.

  • Category C comes first

Category CE is added to a category C licence you already hold, so the training starts with category C in hand. If you do not have it yet, start with the category C course.

  • From the age of 21

Category CE can be obtained from the age of 21. Category C1E, the lighter version of the combination, can be obtained from 18.

How do the theory lessons work?

The theory lessons focus on what changes when you drive a combination: load placement and securing, how the load is distributed between the towing vehicle and the trailer, the size of the combination, and the driver's working and rest hours. Lessons in class are held in Jelgava, at Savienības iela 2.

Category CE driving lessons

Driving lessons with an instructor

The driving lessons practise exactly what you never had to do with a rigid lorry. The combination is longer, it takes a different path through a turn, and reversing with a trailer takes practice. You agree the times directly with your instructor. The compulsory minimum for category CE is 12 academic hours of driving, each 45 minutes. If your instructor judges that you are not ready for the exam, you take further lessons.

Category CE and code 95
